A recent meta-analysis shows that patients’ experience a decrease in all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular events, with a daily step count of 2,600 or more.  A faster cadence augments these benefits.

Dr. Max's Comment

Most of us have been told that 10,000 steps (~5 miles) should be our daily goal for wellness.  It now appears that slightly over 1 mile is sufficient to affect improved cardiovascular wellness.  This should be encouraging to our deconditioned patients.  Based on this study, I will be encouraging my patients to start at a goal of one mile and at a leisurely pace of 20-25 minutes per mile.  Over time, I will encourage them to walk sub-20 minute miles.  When they achieve this goal, then I will ask them to increase their steps/distance.  This will ease patients into a reasonable exercise program that is achievable for most patients.
